A Goldfish on a Mission

pepperandpals:

The goal of #SmallPetRespect is to encourage current and potential owners of small pets to become more educated on the animals they care for.

By tweeting facts and advice, we’ll destroy some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the smallest of our companions.

When it comes to animals like birds (particularly budgies and cockatiels), small mammals, rodents, reptiles, fish (bettas need special mention), amphibians, arachnids, etc, many are picked up on a whim without proper prior research. Many of these animals are cheaply obtained at chain pet stores.

To make matters worse, many enclosures, tanks, cages, and habitats sold in pet stores are not suitable for the animals they are marketed for.

Many animals wind up mistreated due to ignorance and a prevailing attitude that such pets are disposable. It’s time to change that.

Do you share your home with a small pet? What would you say to someone looking into owning one? You can join the conversation on Twitter and Tumblr by tagging #SmallPetRespect.

Share stories, wisdom learned, facts, resources, advice and more. Please signal boost! Help us show that though they are small, all pets deserve respect.

Cis people are so gullible. A doctor basically gave a quick glance at your junk before you were even old enough to communicate and you think that’s the best gauge of your gender? Sad.

My new Crowntail Betta fish named Pheonix. :D #crowntail #betta #fish #pheonix #bettafish

Hi! Unfortunately this is a really bad home for Phoenix :( Contrary to popular belief, betta do not live in puddles and keeping one in a bowl will lead to its suffering and premature death.
Betta need at least 2.5 gallons to thrive, preferably 5 gallons. Bigger setups are actually easier to maintain!
In a small bowls like this ammonia builds up too fast and will slowly poison and eventually kill your fish. Fish create ammonia when they breathe and poo, and ammonia is toxic to them. Ammonia can’t be seen or smelled - so water can be crystal clear and still toxic to fish. In a container this small you’d have to be doing twice daily water changes to keep ammonia from harming your fish.
Betta are also tropical fish and require a heater! They need to be at water temperatures of 75-80 degrees - room temperature is too cold for them. Cold leaves them lethargic, sickly and open to other problems. But you can’t safely use a heater in a container this small, so again, I urge you to get him a bigger tank!
You won’t regret it - betta can be such personality filled, zippy little fish when given the room to be! Some studies even say they’re just as smart as other animals, and can feel pain the same way. So please don’t let your little guy suffer - get him a better home!

Here’s a cheap 5.5 gallon tank that would be great for your little guy! You just need to also get a heater.

If your not a marine biologist gtfo. Your facts are wrong btw. Its my fish, leave me alone.

So basically what you’re saying is: I don’t give a shit about my fish.
What this person linked and said is all true. I’m sure you didn’t even bother to read everything or click the links. Fish need much more room than you and most of the public think. I suggest listening to kai-ni, otherwise your fish will die in a year or two, and live a miserable life.

Their life span is 2 years, whats your point?

^ That just proved my point. You don’t give a shit about a living being. It depends on you for proper care. Even if it lived a few weeks, it should STILL receive the best care you can give it - which is NOT in a tiny ass bowl with a huge ass plastic plant that can rips it’s fins taking up most of the space.

Bettas can live an upwards of 5 years. I currently have a betta that is going on 5 years. When properly cared for they can live longer. If you don’t want to care for a fish, don’t get a fucking fish.

Im 90% sure

are going to school to be marine biologists and they preach this stuff too.

izzy-the-fish-girl has definitely gone to school for this. So are you going to take our advice now?

I can confirm this. I have a degree in Fisheries Science from Virginia Tech. I am attending a fisheries science master’s program in the fall.
While I understand it’s a hard pill to swallow that you haven’t been giving your pet proper care, a lot of us had to do that at one point in time, but keeping animals is a learning process. That’s part of the joy.
If you don’t believe us, at least check out the Anabantoid Association of Great Britain and their guidelines to keeping Betta splendens.
Your betta really is gorgeous. A larger tank and warmer water would let you see his fins so much better. I do hope you’ll consider what we said. And the bowl wouldn’t even have to go to waste! Put a marimo in it! They are cute little fuzz balls! :3

^ BOOM. SIT DOWN.

Here is a video of the boy I just bid on! He looks to have some minor spoon head going on, but its still hard to tell from the video. As I’m not interested in breeding him—only would be if he doesn’t show spoon head when I get him—that is fine.

First of all: HELL YEAH I GOT THE JOB!!!!

Now let me show you the betta section at my work! Everyone of them has an own tank (except the females) and they have plenty of space to swim!

I feel so bad for the cute blue white plakat. He lives there for months now and noone wants to buy him.
They also have this gorgeous green halfmoon. I swear I’d have bought him right away if I had another free tank!
